Value

The Value project aimed to critique the material value assigned to jewelry by setting fake plastic gemstones into European-style antique frames. I designed a necklace that mimics the form of precious stones by utilizing the heat-sensitive flexibility of plastic, then mounted them into ornate frames.

I explored the unique characteristics of these materials by shaping them into various artistic forms, with a focus on transforming them into visually compelling pieces of art jewelry. Materials like plastic fragments and discarded tires, which lack conventional material value, were central to my exploration.

Rather than relying on the inherent worth of these materials, my process emphasized the time, labor, and effort invested in crafting each piece. Through this, I sought to shift the perception of value—from the physical material itself to the conceptual significance imbued through the act of making. In this way, the work gains meaning not through what it is made of, but through the process and intention behind its creation.

Bag
This idea leads to an object work. In pursuit of researching disposable matters, I realized that paper bags are treated differently depending on what they contain. Luxury brand paper bags are overrated compared to grocery store paper bags because of monetary worth such as the reputation and history of the brand, even if both of them were discarded after consumption. I tried to reverse materials, reproduce the texture of the paper bags and remove the label. By doing so, I questioned whether or not my bag was considered differently without any brand fame as compared with other paper bags.

In conclusion, the craft I will suggest will incorporate a combination of various labor, time, and artistic transformation, which can emphasize the artistic value of craft with my methodology. Ultimately, the craft will evolve as an object containing the conceptual value. I will establish a final objective to research the meaning of the word 'Value' and to deliver messages that the conceptual value goes beyond the material worth through my methodology.
